Chelipeds are used for holding and carrying food, digging, cracking open shells and warning off would be attackers). and also come with four pairs of walking legs. The carapace is the hard cover or exoskeleton which protects the internal organs of the head, thorax and gills. The Christmas Island red crab (Gecarcoidea natalis) is by far the most obvious of the 14 species of land crabs found on Christmas Island. It is estimated that 120 million of these bright red land crabs live in their preferred shady sites all over the island.
